Biography of Dr. Chukwuma Ogbuanya
Dr. Chukwuma Ezekiel Ogbuanya is a Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Pharmacy, State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, Nigeria. He is an accomplished pharmaceutical microbiologist, educator, and researcher with expertise spanning pharmaceutical microbiology, microbial biotechnology, molecular microbiology, and infectious disease epidemiology. Dr. Ogbuanya obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Microbiology, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His academic training has provided a strong foundation in microbiology, pharmaceutical sciences, molecular biology, and biotechnology, enabling him to contribute meaningfully to teaching, research, and scientific innovation. His research is primarily focused on antimicrobial agents, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infectious disease epidemiology and control, biologics research, antimicrobial peptides, vaccinology, gene therapy, and microbial biotechnology. He is particularly interested in developing innovative approaches for combating drug-resistant microorganisms, improving disease surveillance, advancing biologics, and applying biotechnology to address contemporary public health challenges. Prior to his appointment at SUMAS, Dr. Ogbuanya served as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy Technician/Technology at Eucharistic Heart College of Health Monotechnic, Orba, Enugu State, where he contributed significantly to the training of pharmacy technicians and other healthcare professionals. Throughout his academic career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, curriculum development, student mentorship, and research supervision. His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, scientific inquiry, practical laboratory competence, and the application of evidence-based knowledge to solve real-world healthcare problems. Dr. Ogbuanya possesses extensive laboratory and research expertise in microbial isolation and characterization, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) determination, microbial limit and sterility testing, DNA and RNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, microbial cloning, and microbial strain development. He is also proficient in research design, biostatistics, scientific data analysis using SPSS and Microsoft Excel, and the preparation of scholarly manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. His doctoral research investigated the epidemiology of nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among healthy schoolchildren in Nsukka, Nigeria. The study involved the collection and microbiological analysis of approximately 1,400 nasal specimens using both conventional microbiological techniques and molecular methods, generating important epidemiological data that contribute to antimicrobial resistance surveillance and public health policy. Dr. Ogbuanya has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed publications in respected national and international journals covering antimicrobial susceptibility, medicinal plant research, microbial epidemiology, and pharmaceutical microbiology. His work has attracted scholarly citations and continues to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in pharmaceutical microbiology and biotechnology. He has also presented scientific papers at national and international conferences, including the International Conference on Biologics Research and Development and scientific meetings focused on microbiology, biotechnology, vaccinology, and public health. Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Ogbuanya actively participates in professional development programmes and academic capacity-building initiatives. He participated in the National Entrepreneurship Start-Up Team Initiative Capacity Building Programme for Nigerian universities organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in collaboration with the University of Koblenz, Germany. He is also a member of the Nigeria Society for Microbiology (NSM), through which he contributes to the advancement of microbiological sciences and professional practice in Nigeria. As an emerging scholar, Dr. Ogbuanya is committed to advancing pharmaceutical microbiology through high-quality teaching, impactful research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentorship of the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. His long-term academic vision is to become a professor and internationally recognized research scientist, leading innovative research that addresses antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, biologics, and other critical global health challenges while contributing to improved healthcare delivery and scientific development in Nigeria and beyond.Academic Details
