Biography

Biography of Dr. Ugwu Chinedu Stephen Dr. Ugwu Chinedu Stephen is a Nigerian mathematician, researcher, and academic with a strong background in Applied Mathematics, mathematical modelling, and higher education. He is committed to advancing scientific knowledge through teaching, research, and innovative problem-solving while contributing meaningfully to academic and institutional development. Born on 5th August 1992 in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, Dr. Ugwu pursued his early education at Community Primary School, Aku, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 2001. He proceeded to Boys' Secondary School, Aku, earning his West African Senior School Certificate in 2007. Driven by a passion for mathematics, he enrolled at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mathematics with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in 2012. He further advanced his academic career by earning a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mathematics in 2016 and subsequently completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Mathematics in 2025, both from the same institution. Dr. Ugwu began his professional career as a Further Mathematics Teacher at St. Teresa's College, Nsukka, where he served from 2014 to 2017 and held the additional responsibility of Head of Department (HOD). He later joined QAARDAN Education Foundation, Enugu, serving as a Mathematics Teacher between 2017 and 2019, where he contributed significantly to innovative teaching methodologies and student development. Since 2019, he has been serving as an Assistant Lecturer at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, where he is actively involved in teaching undergraduate mathematics courses, mentoring students, conducting research, and participating in community and institutional academic activities. As a researcher, Dr. Ugwu has developed a strong interest in mathematical modelling, fractional differential equations, epidemiological modelling, and applied mathematics. His scholarly contributions have focused particularly on modelling the transmission dynamics of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) using advanced analytical techniques such as the Homotopy Perturbation Method and the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method. His research findings have been published in reputable national and international journals, contributing to the application of mathematics in public health and disease control. His notable publications include studies on:
  • Application of Fractional Differential Calculus to Ebola Virus Disease Dynamics (2020);
  • Solution of Large Ebola Virus Disease Compartmental Models Using Homotopy Perturbation Method (2023);
  • Approximate Solutions of Fractional Order Ebola Virus Disease Models via Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method (2023); and
  • Complex Fractional Order Ebola Virus Disease Models in the Caputo Sense (2024).
Dr. Ugwu is also an active participant in academic conferences and professional development programmes. He presented a research paper titled "A Mathematical Model on the Tri-trophic Interactions of Living Organisms in an Ecological System" at the 38th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS) held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in June 2019. He also participated in the Quantum Learning System Workshop organized by QAARDAN Education Foundation in September 2019. His commitment to the advancement of mathematics is reflected in his membership of professional organizations, including the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS), which he joined in 2019, and the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), of which he became a member in 2025. Beyond his academic engagements, Dr. Ugwu possesses excellent analytical and computational skills, complemented by proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and general computer applications. He is recognized for his enthusiasm, optimism, teamwork, and ability to work effectively in dynamic environments. Outside his professional responsibilities, he enjoys reading, researching, teaching, listening to news, and playing Ludo, activities that reflect his passion for continuous learning and intellectual engagement. With a solid academic foundation, growing research portfolio, and dedication to excellence in teaching and scholarship, Dr. Ugwu Chinedu Stephen continues to make significant contributions to the fields of Applied Mathematics, mathematical research, and higher education in Nigeria.
